Module 5: Entertainment
Summary: Means of Entertainment
Key points
- Means of entertainment change with time: radio, board games and walk-in cinemas, then e-books, streaming and online games.
- New technologies often take over from old ones (downloads have taken over from disc-based games).
- Use maybe / perhaps when you are not sure (uncertainty).
- Use I’m sure (that)… and No doubt… when you are sure (certainty).
- Project step 1: choose a song and its artist for a wall display.
Rules to remember
Uncertainty
Maybe / Perhaps + sentence: Maybe he is at the cinema. Perhaps it will rain.
Certainty
I’m sure (that) + subject + verb: I’m sure that you will like the film. No doubt + sentence: No doubt she will win.
maybe ≠ may be
maybe (one word) is an adverb: Maybe she is ill. may be (two words) is a verb: She may be ill.
How to do it
- Ask yourself: am I sure or not?
- Not sure: start with Maybe / Perhaps.
- Sure: use I’m sure that… or No doubt… + a complete sentence.
Example
Salma loves the giant screen. No doubt she prefers the walk-in cinema. Maybe her brother prefers streaming.
Common mistakes
- May be he is at home. ✗ — Maybe he is at home. ✓
- No doubt he win. ✗ — No doubt he will win. ✓
